Less than three weeks after one of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr.’s brothers was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in a fatal crash, another of his brothers was arrested in Missouri on suspicion of DWI.

Jevon Porter, a basketball player at Loyola Marymount, was arrested Friday night on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Missouri State Highway Patrol records show that alcohol and speeding were factors involved in Porter’s arrest.

Porter, 20, was not booked into jail in Boone County where the arrest occurred, but was released on summons. Loyola Marymount has since made a brief statement via ESPN: “We are aware of recent reports in the media and are gathering information about the matter.”

Trouble for the Porter family continues

Jevon’s arrest comes as a shock, considering other members of the Porter family have recently gotten themselves into trouble as well.

Nearly two weeks ago, Jevon’s older brother Jontay, received a permanent ban from the NBA. Jontay, a two-way player for the Toronto Raptors, was banned following an investigation that revealed he was betting on games, as well as attempting to influence the outcome of bets with his own play. According to the investigation, Jontay also revealed confidential information to bettors.

Michael Porter Jr., who was in the process of finishing off a very solid full season with the Nuggets, spoke in support of his brother prior to his ban.

“I’ve known my brother my whole life. I know what type of dude he is,” Michael said via ClutchPoints. “He’s excited to play basketball, and I highly doubt he’d do anything to put that in jeopardy.”

Days after Jontay’s ban, the eldest Porter brother, Coban, was sentenced to six years in prison. Coban, a former basketball player at the University of Denver, received six years in prison for a drunk driving crash that killed a Colorado woman in 2023. According to police records, Coban had a blood alcohol level of 0.19, which is more than twice the legal limit. He ran a red light and hit a vehicle, killing Kathy Limon Rothman and severely injuring her passenger. Because of the injuries to the passenger, Coban received a two-year sentence, but he will serve both sentences simultaneously.

Michael Porter Jr. and the Nuggets are in the midst of a playoff run. With all the terrible news surrounding his family, it’s hard to imagine it’s not impacting him in some way.

After the Nuggets’ Game 1 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, MPJ spoke about his family’s struggles and how he is handling himself.

“We’re humans, so we carry our emotions and the things that go on off the court onto the court,” Porter Jr. said via Troy Renck. “But I’m mentally tough, I’ve been through a lot through my whole career, so it was just another one of those things that I had to try to play through.”

Michael has received a lot of support from his Nuggets teammates. According to him, each player texted him separately to check in on him during this tough time.

The Nuggets are set to face the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the NBA Playoffs beginning Saturday.
